Certification Procedures
TRAINING CRITERIA FOR CERTIFICATION APPLICANTS
There are four backgrounds which are acceptable preparation for undertaking
certification:
- Any recognized early childhood education program or equivalent
offered as post secondary training in the province of Nova Scotia, or offered
elsewhere* and considered comparable to NS training, is acceptable.
*Equivalent to or longer than full time ten month program which encorporates
a substantial amount of supervised practicum, about 300 hours or in the case
of the CDS extension program- year 3.
- Any degree program in a recognized educational institution
plus five full time courses related to early childhood education. The course
focus should emphasize development and/or education of preschool children. Either
university level work or courses offered by recognized post secondary
educational institutions are acceptable.
- Those with a Bachelor of Education degree should have three
courses within the degree and three courses after the degree that directly
relate to early childhood education such as child development and recommended
practices.
In addition to the above training criteria, each applicant must fulfill
the following:
- All applicants have to be working directly with children in a permanent
position for a regular amount of time per week, no less than nine months
in any one year.
- Substitutes may only apply for certification if they work a minimum
of three days per week for a minimum period of nine months of any given
year during the certification period.
- All applicants for certification have to have at least two years of working
experience as well as meeting the criteria outlined above.
