  Five Corners, the business and social center of our community, was formed by the intersection of Wellington Avenue, the New Westminster-Yale Wagon Road, and Young Road.

In this interactive program, students view slides of a flood and a fire that changed the community, construct false front buildings, create newspaper advertisements and catalogue artifacts related to the business community. They will gain an understanding of how community's form and some of the factors that can affect change within a community.

Prescribed Learning Outcomes of the Social Studies Curriculum

It is expected that students will:

  • Describe ways that members of a community meet one-another's needs
  • Describe the historical development of various B.C. communities
  • Understand the use and value of money as a means of exchange
  • Identify contributions of various occupations
  • Describe the influences of media on consumer choices
