  Thirty thousand gold seekers traveled up the Fraser River in 1858 searching for gold. Students will follow the diary of early settler Charles Evans as he describes his arduous journey (via Panama) from Ontario to B.C. in 1862, as one of the many individuals drawn by the lure of gold.

Students investigate the gallery, interpret artifacts and make bannock. Slides illustrate transportation en-route to the gold fields.

Prescribed Learning Outcomes of the Social Studies Curriculum

It is expected that students will:

  • Describe the historical development of various B.C. communities
  • Understand the use and value of money as a means of exchange
  • Describe ways in which communities are interdependent
  • Describe the development of various B.C. communities in relation to their location and availability of resources
  • Identify contributions of various occupations to B.C. communities
  • Appreciate the contributions of Aboriginal people
  • Understand some of the reasons immigrants came to Canada
  • Understand how supply and demand are affected by population and the availability of resources
  • Describe factors that influence use and development of transportation and communication system
