Born in 1885 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, Arthur Lismer moved to Canada and became both a member of the Group of Seven and a Canadian war artist. In June 1918, while employed as Principal of the Nova Scotia College of Art, the Canadian War Records commissioned Lismer to paint the activities of the armed forces in Halifax. In August 1919 he returned to Toronto and became vice-principal of the Ontario College of Art. Upon resigning as vice-principal, Lismer became Educational Supervisor of the Art Gallery of Toronto. He later accepted positions at Columbia University, the National Gallery in Ottawa, the Montreal Museum of Fine Art, and McGill University. Until the time of his death in 1969, Lismer continued to lecture, sketch, and paint. |
