Hornell, David Ernest (1910-1944). Born in Mimico, Ontario on January 26th, 1910, Flight Lieutenant "Bud" Hornell died off the Shetland Islands on June 25th, 1944. Lieutenant Hornell, a pilot engaged in anti-submarine patrol, spotted a surfaced U-boat and sank it with depth charges. He then managed to land his badly damaged and burning twin-engine plane on heavy seas. Overcome by the twenty foot waves and the cold, Hornell became seasick. Twenty-one hours later the survivors were rescued. A blind and exhausted Hornell died shortly thereafter. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. |
