School Bus: This school bus is a great example of
what would have been used in the early 1930s to get the children to school. As you can
tell, it is not at all like the schoolbuses we use today. It had wooden seats that were
set very close to each other. This would have made the ride, (especially with the
condition many roads were) very uncomfortable. The schoolbus had no top, so it could only
be used during the warmer months of the year. There is a crank at the front of the bus,
unlike cars today, this is what would have been used to start engines back then.
This
particular schoolbus was used in the downtown area, it would have been much more uncommon
to see a school bus like this one in a rural area such as Cumberland. The schoolbus is
still operational, but it is used only very rarely. It is in very good condition, but if
it were to be used, it would deteriorate quickly. |
