 The Grier-Spratt House

This house originally stood on old Montreal road in the village of Cumberland. It now resides beside Watson`s Garage and across from the Fergusson home at the Cumberland Heritage Museum. The longest resident at this house was William Grier. He and his family owned the house between 1872-1914. This house was originally owned by Amable Foubert and was then purchased by the Grier family. In 1861 the house was rented to Dr. James Fergusson. He used the house not only to live in but also as an office to practise medicine. In 1924 the house was purchased by James Spratt and then moved to the Cumberland Museum in 1977. Some of the instruments on display at this house include a mortar and pestle, scale, medical bandages, a washing bowl, tweezers, eye droppers and bottles of medicine. In his office there are bookshelves filled with medical journals and literature, a radio, a furnace and a desk and chair.
