To use the Linotype, the person typed in the characters he
required on a keyboard to formed a mold. He would then pour melted lead into the mold to
form a cast. After pouring the lead, he would have gone to finish some other jobs and then
come back when the cast was set. Once the job was finished the lead could be re-melted and
used again for the next mold! The print shop owner often developed brain conditions from
working with lead all day. This Linotype printing press - model 8 #42223 is the youngest
model of printing press on display at the Cumberland Heritage Museum. |
