Punishments:
The extent of punishment in our schools
today usually only goes as far as writing out lines, detention or in rare cases, community
service. In the days of French Hill School however punishments were much harsher. Every
teacher would have had a strap of leather that they kept on their desk in case they had to
deal with any unruly children. The leather strap was usually used on the hand. The teacher
would not stop until it started to bleed. The smarter children would pull out a piece of
their hair and wrap it around their hand so that the skin would break sooner and they
would not have had to bear the strap for as long. Other punishments included sitting in
the corner, and kneeling on sharp ledges for extended periods of time. This should make
you happy; you only have to deal with sitting quiet for a half an hour in a detention
room. Any time you start feeling sorry for yourself, think back to this! |
