Stove:
The stove in the waiting room
was for those travelling in the bitter cold of winter trying to get warmed up while they
waited for the train. This is, of course, a wood burning stove since there were no natural
gas lines or electric heaters in those days. It was the station master's responsibility to
have wood ready for the fire and to make sure it didn't go out. This was much appreciated
by the passengers of the train.
Spittoon:
The spittoon looks somewhat
like a bowl and is located in the waiting room. Many people in that period chewed tobacco
and would usually spit it anywhere and everywhere. The spittoon was placed there so that
the tobacco chewers would not spit on the floor and ruin the appearance of the train
station. |
