This is a day bed; also called a fainting couch. The day bed would be used for having a short rest during the busy day. Story has it that when the lady of the house took a dizzy spell, she would lie on the couch with her head at the bottom and her feet at the top. This would allow the blood to flow to her head, rejuvenating her.
