Gas Light Fixture

SpacerThese gas light fixtures are original to Greenwood Cottage; the large one in the Parlour was in place, the other one was in the Masonic Lodge. The lights were run by a gas produced from the combination of carbide and water. The carbide powder (a bi-product of coal) was stored in the basement in a generator similar to the lantern used on the old miners' helmets only much larger. Water would slowly drip through a valve onto the powder; resulting in a chemical reaction that produced acetylene gas. The gas would travel along pipes located inside the walls until it reached the two light fixtures, where when lit would provide a very bright, white light.
