Greenwood Cottage

John Cummigner

SpacerJohn Cummigner was a successful business man and his residence reflected his prosperity. He was born February 10, 1827 in Sherbrooke. Sarah, his wife was born in 1863. Legend claims that on a vacation in France he saw a Villa which caught his eye and returned home with the plans in his pocket to build the home for Sarah. Greenwood Cottage was completed in the early 1870's. The beautiful home is anything but a cottage. This name is believed to have been used because of the intricate Gingerbread Cottage trim along the eaves of the home. Local tradition also remembers Sarah as usually being seen in long silk dresses with a fancy parasol. John and Sarah had no children, however they did have two maids who lived in the basement where the kitchen was located and a gardener who lived in the attic. The Cottage has a Widow's Watch located in the attic that consists of four circular windows, one on each side of the house from which a great deal of the Village can be seen.
