Local History of Gold Mining
Gold was first discovered in the Sherbrooke area in 1861. Nelson Nickerson discovered gold on his farm in Goldenville while he was making hay. It wasn't until October 18 of the same year that the news of his find became widespread. 200 people flocked to Goldenville to stake their claims, and by 1869 there were 19 companies mining in the area. Additional gold veins were discovered around the province around the same time. In 1858, gold was discovered in Tangier and in 1861 more gold was discovered in Oldham, Wine Harbour, Stormont, Waverly, Cochran Hill, and Forest Hills.
