When the maid was not cooking or cleaning for the doctor and his family, she would be spending some of her time here, sewing for the family. The only heat would be from the chimney going through her room or from heat that escaped upstairs from the kitchen. The room is quite dark and sparse compared to the other bedrooms in the house.
