Graphic Design Unit Abstract

This unit is aimed at Grades 11 and 12 and has been completed in the classroom of Brenda Grant, Elizabeth Wynwood School, Ottawa, with great success. It can be incorporated into a variety of courses, including the Ontario Data Processing courses BPC 3G, BPT 3A, BPA 4G and BPS 4A, in relation to teaching about design principles and personal communication. It would fit well in a course on multi-media production and the Internet, in a course on media studies, and in an introductory art course. Graphic design touches many aspects of school life and can serve within almost any curriculum. No prior knowledge of graphic design is necessary to teach this unit. The unit begins with analysing graphic design in the world around us and moves through concepts in graphic design and methods of production. Midway through the unit, using computers in graphic is emphasized and two assignments are given for students to work in this area. There are six lessons and three assignments. The unit will take appoximately 16.5 hours to complete.
