Important Note

Native culture is fundamentally an oral culture and written text is therefore not necessarily easily found. The above are simply recommended sources that proved useful in the organization of this unit. Every major city should have a Native Friendship Centre or other Native organization. Call the Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres in Toronto, the umbrella organization for 26 member Friendship Centres in the province, for the Centre nearest you. They exist to help all people with information and support for/about Aboriginal people. Furthermore, I have included the Band Office numbers for the seven Iroquois communities in Canada. It is highly recommended and necessary to invite speakers from the Nations from which you are studying - otherwise, we are doing no justice to teaching the subject. Native people are alive and growing; forever adapting to the changes in North America. Inviting a speaker not only shows students that the culture is still alive, but that hearing the voice of such people allows a direct and respectful relationship to build and grow between the vary diverse people of Canada.
