Abstract

The following is a multicultural exploration unit for use in the intermediate English classroom. It is designed so that students can learn more about the cultures and regions of Canada through reading, researching, writing, discussing, and reporting. Topics include: autobiography, Canadian immigrants, multiculturalism across Canada, and First Nations. When writing their autobiography, the use of the Internet and texts, discussions with family members and contacting community centers are some of the pathways students are encouraged to explore. At the end of their family history research, students organize a multicultural fair. The Canadian multicultural stories topic divides the class into groups that research different geographical areas of Canada, including multicultural literature from that area. Students also complete assignments daily that focus on a different region of Canada and on various cultural issues. This topic is designed for very good Internet access (no more than 3 students to a computer; computers available every day). As an alternative to students using the Internet themselves, you can copy information onto paper or use some multicultural stories from the resource books listed. This unit also looks at Native culture by reading stories from various native groups and writing their own legends. A book report is also included. It involves creative activities that tie into the rest of the unit. The unit is designed for the intermediate English classroom but the frame can be adapted for any level. Assessment is based on reading, journal writing, a portfolio of collected works from throughout the unit, discussion participation and creative presentations. It spans approximately 6 weeks but it can be modified to fit any time frame. For example, two major celebration days are planned for the unit but you might decide to focus on either the multicultural fair or the Canadian regional art gallery. In younger classes the fair preparation will take more time.
