What does landscape mean to Canadians? Brainstorm some ideas about how Canadians deal with the weather and use the wilderness for recreation. If possible, look at some Inuit art and some Group of Seven paintings on the Internet. How has landscape influenced the artists?

Assignment: Tell students to go for a walk around where they live and to pay attention to the defining characteristics of the land there. (They may wish to do this in a park instead.) Write a descriptive paragraph about it using as many of the senses as possible.
