INTRODUCTION

Set the mood by asking students to close their eyes and clear their minds. Read the poem "Carabana: Toronto" by Daniel Caudeiron (p. 116 in A Shapely Fire). When finished, ask students to freewrite in their journals what they imagined was taking place. Next explain that Mr. Caudeiron is a black Canadian poet and the poem is about a Caribbean festival that takes place every summer in Toronto. Discuss the importance of festivals to cultural identity.
