LESSON 2.1. Canadian Immigrants

INTRODUCTION

Collect autobiographies. They should be placed in the room where they are visible and accessible to everyone. However, it is important to be sensitive to the personal information and students should be allowed to hand in their work privately.

Read "My New Home" by Denny Hunte (p. 72 in Talking About Difference)

In journals, freewrite about how students imagine it would feel to come as an immigrant to a new country. Think of problems they might face, prejudices, experiences and fears.Discuss what it means to be a refugee. How is that experience different from being an immigrant who moved by choice? How is it similar?
