Objectives

Students will:

explore the meaning of culture as part of their own life stories appreciate the importance of cultural diversity to Canada demonstrate respect for people of all cultural backgrounds discover, through home discussion and research, stories of their own cultural heritage explore their own ancestry by creating a story about their own acestors that includes why and how they came to Canada share with the class the stories of their cultural heritage, both in listening and presenting appreciate the cultural contrubutions made to Canada by immigrants show an understanding of the circumstances that bring refugees into Canada and the difficulties they face in coming to a new country research stories from a given area in Canada that include a variety of cultures and contexts use the Internet to connect to Web sites that contain information from various regions of Canada use literature to develop an appreciation of the cultures across Canada

Ontario Curriculum Objectives:

The Ontario English curriculum is currently being revised. The following objectives are from the 1987 document published by the Ontario Ministry of Education.

  • Acquire the basic knowledge and skills needed to comprehend and express ideas through words
  • Gain satisfaction from participating and from sharing the participation of others in various forms of artistic expression
  • Develop a feeling of self-worth
  • Develop an understanding of the role of the individual within the family and the role of the family within society
  • Develop esteem for the customs, cultures, and beliefs of a wide variety of societal groups
  • Develop values related to personal, ethical, or religious beliefs and to the common welfare of society
