Topic-Lesson Plan

Concept: Interpretation and Recall. Skill: Listening, Expression, Connection.
Objectives:

Students will have the opportunity to listen to and analyze several aspects of Native music.

Materials:

1. Recordings Music from various Festivals, Events, or Rituals

  1. Chart Organizer
  2. Flip Chart Paper, Markers, Tape
Methods:
  1. Ask students to recall various elements noted in western music studied during the year. List these on the board. If this discussion has not previously occurred with regard to western music, ask student to then identify various elements that they hear in their own music. (Tempo, Dynamics, Instrumentation, Range, …)
  2. Lead a recall session, having students identify the purpose of these elements. Why are they important to music?
  3. Distribute the chart organizers, and have them fill in the title for each box according to the elements previously discussed.
  4. Play a recording of Native music without telling the students what it is they will be listening to.
  5. Have students listen to it, and record in their own words or symbols, descriptions for each category. They will probably need to hear it again.
  6. When complete, tell them the event or purpose of the song and ask them if their descriptions are appropriate for the purpose (i.e. Hunting Song).
  7. Repeat steps 3 through 5 with a contrasting piece.
  8. Once complete, have them go to stations labeled by their titles, filling in their descriptions for both pieces. The station sheets should be labeled (i.e. Tempo) and divided in 2 sections.
  9. Post the writings on the board and discuss the possible reasons for the differences between the two selections, leading to an introductory understanding of the connection between the music and its intended purpose. Can their conclusions be applied to various different types of music? Students should be developing an appreciation for the similarities in music from a global perspective.
  10. Ask them to write a 250 word paragraph describing their opinion of the purpose and function of Native music. This will be compared to developing ideas at a later date.
