Notes on the Curriculum Guidelines:

Music:

This unit meets those programming considerations of the Curriculum Guidelines for Music: Intermediate Senior prepared by the Ministry of Education of the province of Ontario (1990) which concern values education, languages across the curriculum, and racial and ethnocultural equity. Students have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of Aboriginal Cultures and values and work cooperatively and actively to interpret and apply musical expressions.

For the Grade 7 and 8 level programs, this unit meets with objectives including listening, performing and creating, using voices as a means for expression, learning interpretive skills, and most especially, listening to, identifying, and describing music of many periods, styles, and cultures while responding with sensitivity to many types of music.

The same objective guidelines apply to the Grade 9 program. This unit can be incorporated into the following courses:

  • AMI - Instrumental Band
  • AMA - Introduction to Music
  • AML - Listening to Music
  • AMV - Vocal / Choral Music

Additional musical concepts emphasized in the guidelines and in this unit include:

  • pitch-melody
  • rhythm
  • tone color
  • texture
  • form

History:

The Curriculum Guidelines for History and Contemporary Studies for the Intermediate Division prepared for the Ministry of Education of the province of Ontario state that units and teaching must direct attention to the following elements which are addressed in this unit:

  • an approach to history with a focus on broadening communities;
  • focus on the lives of people;
  • develop a sense of personal identity, of relationships with their communities, and of identity as Canadians;
  • understand the contributions of Native people to Canada's multicultural heritage.

For the Grades 7 and 8 levels, established units in which this unit could be incorporated include "Local" or "Native Communities", "Shaping the Nation", and "The Nation Expands". Each of these spans 20% of the year and teachers are provided with the flexibility to extend the units if necessary.

For the Grade 9 levels two courses are offered: "Contemporary Canada: Life in the Twentieth Century" and "Living in a Changing World". For "Contemporary Canada" this unit could be incorporated into the "Social and Economic Issues" section which is suggested to be designed for 15% of the course and has a focus on Canada and multiculturalism while offering the opportunity to focus on historical and future oriented issues in order to clarify present-day concerns. For "Living in a Changing World" two sections would accept this unit. They include "The Multicultural Society" and "The Individual and Society" which are both suggested to be designed for 20% of the entire course and create the opportunity for a study of Native Cultures in Canada.
