Geological Influences - continued

Local fault lines and cross fault lines.
NAPL A26235-167

The Gloucester Fault guided the location of an ancient river channel which later became Dow's Great Swamp. The fault system also contributed to the formation of a series of bluffs to the immediate west.

Aboriginal activities were also influenced in that a portage was necessary around the rapids. A pre-European camp site near the rapids west of the railway bridge has been suggested, however no information is available on the occupation of the area.

Today, the geology of the campus provides an opportunity to use fault-controlled groundwater as part of an economical cooling and heating system. Carleton University's Groundwater Project implements one of the largest such systems in North America. Ongoing research, as part of this initiative, continues to contribute to a more precise understanding of the local geology.
