Sadly enough, the use of pesticides such as DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) and dieldrin are directly related to the peregrine's decline. Residues (what is left after the chemical breaks down) can stay in the environment for many years and are passed along the food chain. High residue levels in the peregrine resulted in abnormal breeding behaviour, thin eggshells and dead embryos (an animal at any stage of development before birth or hatching) within the egg.
