Fostering allows wild perefrine falcons to fledge (raise young until they are ready to fly) the maximum number of young. Lost eggs or chicks are replaced in the nest in order to keep the number of young at four in each nest. Although five eggs have been reported to occur naturally, four eggs is more common.
