The Forks is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the historical junction of the Assinboine River (headwaters in Saskatchewan) and the Red River. This spot is a year round favorite among locals and tourists. At the Forks, there are museums, specialty food, gift shops, art galleries, restaurants and much more.

The Red River of the North Basin stretches from northeastern South Dakota and Minnesota northward through eastern North Dakota and Northwestern Minnesota into Southern Manitoba. It ends where the Red River empties into the southern end of Lake Winnipeg.

The Red River Basin is a unique place. As the site of a former glacial lake, its drainage area contains some of the richest and flattest farmland in the world.

The Red River Valley floods yearly to some extent as a result of the combination of:

  • its flat topography,
  • north-flowing meltwater backing-up against still frozen snow and ice farther north,
  • high-precipitation events,
  • small stream channels (relative to their drainage area) with limited holding capacity,
  • and increased runoff from farmlands and urban centers.
