Intensive urbanization has taken place
since the area surrounding the Humber Marshes was initially
settled over 200 years ago. The urbanization of this area
has dramatically altered. Some of the natural features of
the area were destroyed, resulting in the fragmentation
and loss of habitat for many organisms.
Another major problem facing the Humber
is the presence of exotic or non-native species such as
purple loosestrife, lamprey and carp, which also affect
the habitat and food availability for native species.
One of the Humber Community Action Sites
- Sun Row Park, is located in the Lower Humber subwatershed,
within the City of Etobicoke. There is a lack of riparian
habitat on the site due to poor water quality. Several stormwater
drains are located throughout the park.
Rehabilitation efforts such as adding stone
filled baskets to stabilize the stream banks that are eroding
have been implemented. The project also addresses urban
stormwater runoff as it contributes to water pollution and
further habitat loss.
