Ptarmigan Lake is located just at the tree line of the Rockies. In the winter the surface of lake has a thin sheen of ice on the top, which creates musical sounds when a flat stone is slid across it. It is also where you can find the ptarmigan grouse, it changes colour depending on the season. In the winter it is white, camouflaged by the snow for protection from its predators.
