The Impact of Technology and Chemistry on Society

Subject Area

This activity has been designed for the Grade 11 advanced or General Chemistry curriculum. It could be used as an introduction to the course or as an introduction to the Chemistry and Society project; in Core Unit 7: Industry and Society in SCH 3AI; Optional Unit 2: Consumer Chemistry in SCA 3GI.

Learning Outcomes

Teaching, learning and evaluation will focus on the student's ability to:

  • Identify and describe important technological advances;
  • Identify and describe products in our society which are not necessary;
  • Evaluate our priorities as consumers;
  • Gain an appreciation for the importance of science in our lives.

Classroom Development

  1. Present the class with the accompanying overhead. Have the students copy these points into their notebooks.
  2. Direct the class to do one of the following:
    • Respond to the statements in their notebooks
    • Brainstorm in groups
    • Consider the ideas first individually and then share with the group
  3. Consider products developed by the chemical industry and/or technological products.
  4. Extension: Interview senior citizens on the technological changes that they found to have had the most profound effect on their lives.

Background

Make sure that students are able to perform brainstorming activities in accordance with the needs of the activity. A pre-activity review of brainstorming and perhaps the listing of skills may be desirable.

Timing

One period . Allow 10 min for group brainstorming and 30 min to discuss results. Expect discussions to get off-topic, and be prepared to let them continue off the specific topic if students keep with the spirit of the activity.

Cross-disciplinary Links

Family Studies - Consider processed foods and new food products. These products could be evaluated.

Marketing - Expand this topic in the marketing (business) curriculum by considering how harmful or unnecessary products are advertised to entice us to purchase them.
