10 An Islander joins a Lebanese family, 1961

Mike and I have been dating for a few months now and so far, things have been great. He started teaching at my school earlier this year and believe it or not, he was one of the college students who never paid attention to me when I was in high school. Even back then, I always thought he was kind of cute, so I'm glad things are different now! I wonder how my parents will feel about Mike, though. He's the first non-Lebanese guy I've ever dated since my brothers all married Lebanese wives, he'll be the first "outsider" any of us has brought home. I don't think it will matter much to Mom and Dad because they've always said "all they've ever wanted was for us to be happy," but I'm nervous just the same.I'm even more nervous about how Mike's parents will think of me. It would be different if his parents were from Charlottetown and knew my family well, but they live out in the country and I don't think they've ever seen a person of Lebanese descent before!A lot of things have changed since my parents first came to the Island all those years ago, but I know some of the old prejudices still remain. I hope Mike's parents will accept me as much as he does.
