12 From peddler to power, 1986

Facts - Statement by Joe Ghiz

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Mom as upset as she was when she heard that comment about Joe Ghiz on the news last week.  I was so proud of her when the paper published the letter she wrote the next day.

I can’t remember how many people called to congratulate Mom since then, especially after Joe Ghiz made that speech a few days ago saying how proud he was to be an Islander and a Canadian of Lebanese descent.  Mom almost cried when she heard that speech and she said Joe Ghiz spoke for every Lebanese-Canadian on the Island that night.

It looks like next week’s election will still be pretty close, but at least people have stopped talking about Joe Ghiz being Lebanese.  It’s strange it took somebody from outside P.E.I. to bring something like that up.  They obviously don’t know how many Lebanese-owned corner stores are in this city!

I wasn’t sure how to end my essay about Grandpa Omar, but I think now I have an idea…
