The Songhees Village
"Being large and well ventilated by means of the gaps in the sides and roof, the huts were by no means the bad smelling places you might expect, & the wood smoke always seems to purify the air. Just as we got into the town, we saw an Indian woman squatted after their usual fashion, on the footpath who attracted our attention by having a piece of bone inserted in her lower lip. How I grieve that I cannot draw what I see - . The kind of long black crescent under the tooth means the piece of bone - sometimes a silver ornament takes its place. These ornaments are I believe not often seen & you can imagine the disagreeable effect."
