Charles Ross

Charles Ross was originally a Scotsman; he crossed the Atlantic in 1818 in the employment of the Hudson's Bay Company. After working his way up from clerk to Chief Factor at Fort McLoughlin, he was transferred to Fort Victoria. He, Roderick Finlayson and about forty others arrived at "Quahl-sn-ela" harbour in June, 1843. They built the fort during that year employing the help of the Songhees tribe. In 1844, approximately one year after his arrival, Charles Ross died a painful death after having suffered with an intestinal illness for some time.

Ross was survived by his wife Isabella Merilia, who became the first woman to own property in Victoria. It is after her that Ross Bay was named. She also named Foul Bay, though it was originally spelled "Fowl". She died at St. Anne's convent in 1885.
