Technical Tips

Compatibility

This page has been written with many browsers in mind. We won't drag you into any one company's technology (even if some of us have our own opinions). It is completely compatible with the following browsers:

  • Netscape Navigator 3.0
  • Netscape Communicator/Navigator 4.0
  • Netscape Communicator 4.5PR
  • Microsoft Inernet Explorer 3.0
  • Microsoft Inernet Explorer 4.0
It is partially compatible with the following browsers- it will work, but the user will be missing a few features, such as button tips, the search utility, some of the layouts and the floating glossary:
  • Netscape Navigator 2.0
  • NCSA Mosaic 2.0
  • NCSA Mosaic 3.0
It is known not to work with the following browsers:
  • Netscape 1.1
  • Mosaic 1.3
Netscape and Microsoft seem to have organized the disappearance of their really old browsers (or maybe people just like upgrading). If you have a copy of Netscape 1.0 (the "pulsing, throbbing N" version) or MSIE 1.0 or 2.0, and want to try the site out on them, we'd be interested to hear what happens. Screen Depth and Size

Although everything works in 256 colour 640 x 480, we reccomend thousands of colours for smoothness, and 800 x 600 or better reolution. If your computer is capable of this but is set low (for running games, for example), set your screen for a higher-quality image. You deserve better.

Cache and Other Browser Settings

We highly reccomend giving your browser a disk cache and a good-sized chunk of memory. Many images in this site repeat, and by letting your browser cache them, you will save some download time. If you are on a slow connection, feel free to turn images off, all images have descriptions so you can pick and choose.

How Not to Crash the Site

Ideally, when you enter this site, it should be through your first browser window, not some spawned window or new browser window. Use of "new window with this link" on glossary links may cause strange behaviour. Opening multiple windows in adddition to AgroMedia will chew up browser memory like crazy. You have been warned.
