FIRE GUTS SCHOOL

Fire of an undetermined origin early Friday night completely gutted the 10 roomed St. Augustine School in Humboldt.

The blaze, which apparently started in the northwest part of the second floor of the building, had a substantial foothold before it was discovered. Most of the contents were lost in the fire, but some salvage is possible.

Damage is said to be in excess of $500,000. There was nobody in the building at the time of the fire.

While the solid brick walls of the structure are still standing, an investigating official did say it was considered likely the building

would be a total loss.

There was no damage done to the nearby new building on the school grounds.

An aftermath of the fire has been the termination of daily classes for Grades 1 to 4 at the school.

Elementary school teachers whose classes have been terminated are being utilized in salvage work at the wrecked school.

The original St. Augustine School was built in 1936. Since that time 2 additions have been made to the building.
