$2.00 per Year in Advance |
Real, live interest in the future development of Humboldt as an industrial center was in evidence at a well attended meeting of citizens held in the council chambers last Friday evening. It was one of the best attended and most representative meetings that has been held for some time, indicating renewed interest in civic matters and the good of the town and district.
TO ENCOURAGE MANUFACTURING CONCERNS One object of the meeting was to consider what inducements the town could offer to a certain manufacturing concern that at present is looking for a location in the west. The matter was introduced by F. H. Bence who had met the head of the company on the train, and learned that the company was looking for a favorable point in Saskatchewan at which to locate their manufacturing plant. He also reported that an option had been secured on some trackage property, which could be secured at a reasonable price if it was required. While the name of the company was withheld from the press, it was stated that the firm was engaged in the manufacture of a most important implement and on the commencement of operations would employ in the neighborhood of twenty five men, which number would increase as operations proceeded. The meeting expressed its approval of offering any reasonable inducement to the company to locate in Humboldt, such points as the site, light and power races, and assessment, being mentioned. Mayor Crawley, who presided at the meeting, said that these were matters council to wished to have the opinion of the citizens as to the importance of the proposition in question and whether the concern warranted the granting of certain concessions. The whole question will be further dealt with at |
the meeting of the council next Monday night.
BOARD OF TRADE IS ORGANIZED An important outcome of the meeting was the reorganization of the Board of Trade. During the past few years the Community Club has been carrying on the work, (or at least such as lie in its power), that was formerly done by the board of trade. Several of those present expressed the opinion that a board of trade was a necessity, as there should be some organization that could deal with a proposition such as the one that had just now come before the meeting. E. S. Wilson brought the matter to a head with a motion that the board of trade be reorganized, which carried unanimously. He pointed out that Western Canada was just now entering upon a great industrial development. Towns and cities that had had little real growth for a number of years, were now showing development. Industries of various kinds were coming into the west and locating. Humboldt was well situated, he said, to share in this expansion, and we should be awake to the opportunities and ready to act when occasion arises. Several others spoke along similar lines pointing out that Humboldt had good railway faculties and other features that should commend themselves to any industrial concern desiring a favorable point to locate.
