FARMERS INSTITUTE MEETING A SUCCESS
The first Farmers' Institute meeting to be held in Humboldt was conducted Wednesday afternoon at Hawson Bros.’ livery stable. Owing to the bad condition of the roads there was not nearly the crowd present that was expected but nevertheless a good number were on hand and the meeting was pronounced a success. The first speaker was Mr. William Gibson a successful agriculturist of Wolseley, who conducted a stock judging school. He took first the dairy cow, and with a live animal gave a thorough explanation of all the different points about an ideal dairy cow. He next took a beef animal, explaining thoroughly all the different points and features, where the most flesh should be from a butcher's point of view, the hindquarters, the body, the forequarters, head and neck and the general appearance of the animal. Everyone was given a score card. and they scored the animals used for illustration according to their judgment. Mr. Gibson also scored the animals and compared notes with the students, and showed them where they were wrong.

Mr. Murray, superintendent of fairs and institutes, followed Mr. Gibson. He spoke along agricultural lines and gave a good deal of valuable information regarding the variety of wheat best adapted to this country, number of bushels should be sown to the acre, etc. Mr. Murray pointed out that Red Fife wheat had proven the most successful in this country. He up held the custom of summer fallowing a means of keeping down weeds; but poor summer fallowing would do more harm than good. When concluding Mr. Murray strongly advocated the formation of an agricultural society in Humboldt, and hoped that someone would take the responsibility upon himself to form such an organization.

Dr. Neely, M. L. A., concluded the meeting in a short speech, and moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Gibson and Mr. Murray for the very valuable information they had given to the meeting. The motion was answered by hearty applause.
