MR. JACOBSEN EXPLAINS C.N.R. IMMIGRATION POLICY AT COMMUNITY CLUB LUNCHEON

The question of securing new settlers for the Humboldt district was discussed by Mr. Carl Jacobsen, of the Colonization and Development Department, Canadian National Railways, at the Community Club luncheon last Thursday. Mr. Jacobsen is of Danish extraction and has been engaged for many years on immigration, both with the Dominion government and with the Canadian National Railways.

Mr. Jacobsen explained that last year, largely through the influence of the steamship companies, many people were brought to this country from Europe who were not desirable settlers It was hoped, however, that this would not again occur. The immigration policy of the Canadian National Railways was to bring out only farmers or those who wished to farm, and who had sufficient means to at once engage in operations. In fact the company advocated and urged all new settlers who came out from Europe, to engage with a farmer for a year or two in order that they might get accustomed to the methods of farming here before taking up farming for themselves. Mr. Jacobsen also thought it was a mistake to locate settlers in a district who were not of the same country as those already in the district, as he did not think they would become satisfied settlers. Another feature of the company's immigration policy was that settlers were not permitted to bring out their wives and families

until they had gotten properly settled. The settlers would be brought out between March 15th and May 15th, and they did not care to bring any in after this date, during the present year.

The speaker pointed out that Canadian National Railways desired to co-operate with local organizations in the matter of getting new settlers for the Humboldt district. He urged the Community Club to take the matter at once, secure full particulars as to the number and class of settlers it was desired to have come here, and to forward the same to the Colonization Department of the Canadian National Railway at Winnipeg. The company, he said, would do everything possible to get us the kind of people we wanted. He said it was better to get a few of the right kind, rather than a large number, many of who might not be desirable.

Mr. Jon Q. Brandon, who was chairmen of the luncheon, introduced Mr. Jacobsen.

Following Mr. Jacobsen's address, Mr. Brandon pointed out that there should be more co-operation among the citizens in getting new farmers to locate in the district. He knew of many instances where new settlers had been discouraged from locating here by people of the town and district.

For the next luncheon, to be held the first Thursday in April, Mr. Jon. A. Christian was Appointed chairman.
