The Humboldt detachment of the 188th Overseas Battalion were the honored guests of the citizens of Humboldt at a banquet given on Thursday evening last at the Arlington hotel. The spacious dining room was taxed beyond its capacity in accommodating the gathering, which was probably the largest that has ever assembled at a similar affair in Humboldt. It was not only the largest but was also one of the most successful and enjoyable functions of its kind. After a light repast had been partaken of, a couple of hours were pleasantly spent in speeches, songs and music. His Worship Mayor Yoerger very ably filled the position of chairman. Interesting addresses were given by the following gentlemen: Judge Dickson, Mr. Ernest Gardner, Mr. A. D. McIntosh, Dr. A. M. Brown, Mr. R. Telfer, Mr. O. W. Andreasen, Sergt. Keenie, and Lieut. Driver. The speakers vied with each other in their praise of the Humboldt detachment of the 188th, and of their commanding officer, Lieut. Driver, as the resort of whose efforts and perseverance the unit was raised. The boys were as fine a company of soldiers as was ever organized and Humboldt was proud of them. Reference was made to their excellent conduct and behavior while |
off duty, which was one of the best things that could be said of them. They had volunteered to do their bit in this time of the empire's crisis; their many friends would always be thinking of them, and when they returned from the scene of battle, and it was sincerely hoped that all would return, Humboldt would give them a right royal welcome home. Pte. H. W. Stirling sang in fine voice, "Up From Somerset”. Interesting selections were also given by Pte. F. Evers and Pte. Geo. Arle, which were much enjoyed. An orchestra, composed of Messrs J. Jensen, W. A. Westwood, Russel Yoerger and Mrs. Ramey kept the evening lively with excellent music. Programs were provided on which were printed the chorus of the following favorite songs, and after each address the whole gathering would join in singing a certain one: "When they Ask You What Your Name Is", "Up From Somerset", "Tipperary", "We Must Fight for our King and Country", "Do your Bit", "Till the boys come home", "What happened to Mary", "We'll never let the old Flag Fall", and "The Best Old Flag on Earth". The singing of the national anthem brought the evening to a close.
