With the completion of the town well which went into operation on Thursday last, Nov. 17, when Mayor R. G. Yoerger officially closed the switch which started the electric motor, Humboldt's municipal water supply would appear to be solved. The well, the drilling of which commenced several months ago, is 186 feet deep, and is the first of two units which it is estimated will be required to guarantee an adequate supply. The motor driven turbine pump, five stage, is installed in a concrete house adjacent to the water tower, and is electrically controlled by a push button station in the power house. It is estimated that there will be a substantial saving in operation of these turbine wells, against pumping from Stoney lake, as formerly, or buying from the C.N.R. from |
their Burton lake source. This will be sufficient to pay for the capital outlay in a few years. The drilling of wells was only decided upon after careful exploration work had first been done, test holes having been sunk and all water bearing strata down to a depth of 550 feet carefully checked and the water analyzed, resulting eventually in the 180 foot level being chosen. Announcement will be made when the water is to be used through the taps. After the well has been thoroughly tested in regard to both quantity and quality, the town will go into the question of installing a softening plant, and the Mayor has been advised by waterworks authorities that the present filtration plant could be utilized.
