The Buffalo jump is in the Roan Mare Coulee 2 miles (3.5
Kilometers) North of where you cross it. To get there continue east for a
mile (1.5 Kilometers). Upon reaching the top of the Roan Mare Coulee's East
side a lesser road marked by a sign leads you north to a natural turn. Slow
down and enjoy the view. There are signs at the entrance fence. We urge you
to read them and heed them.
A couple of hundred yards further you can look up at the sandstone
outcrop where the buffalo were stampeded over a 45 foot (15 meter)fall to
sloping ground, where they were surely broken, or stunned for
slaughter.
You may wish to climb up around the drop-off to view the small
stone piles that held up guide lines. However anyone with health or infirmity
problems (or slippery shoes) shouldn't attempt the climb, but could send
their camera up with some more agile person.
This Encampment and kill site, was Archaeologically dug in
1988 by Dr. Ernie Walker of the University of Saskatchewan. More information
is available in details if requested.
Remember, do not take home souvenirs or disturb anything,
leave the originality for future generations.
Your next stop is at the stone outlined Turtle Effigy (providing
that it hasn't recently rained).
