Amethyst

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, the most common mineral in the Earth's crust. The violet color of amethyst is caused by trace amounts of iron and manganese. This sample from Brazil was formed within cavities (geodes) in volcanic rocks. Its crystals are hexagonal and terminated by two hexagonal dipyramids.
