Kensington
is a comprehensive pictorial history of Kensington
Market from its beginnings in the 1800s
right up to the present time. It was written by
Jean Cochrane with photographs by Vincenzo Pietropaolo,
and published by Boston Mills in 2000. Kensington
was a special project of St. Stephens Community
House to commemorate its 25th anniversary, since
incorporation, of providing services in Kensington Market and
surrounding neighbourhoods, as an independent,
not-for-profit organization. Kensington includes
biographies on such historic figures as the Denison
Family, and over 200 photographs, maps and diagrams
of Kensington Market, some dating back to pre-Confederation
Canada.
Kensington
won the 2002 Fred Landon Award for the best historical
book depicting a neighbourhood. It was also a
Toronto Book Awards finalist (top 5) in 2001.
Kensington can be purchased at most local bookstores
or through St. Stephens Community House
91 Bellevue Avenue location.
