Preparations

There are a lot of preparations required in order to undertake an underwater archeological excavation. Perhaps the obvious starting point is locating sponsors who will assist in the cost of a project of this nature. Some companies will provide equipment support which is an essential element in the success of the project. Also, since there is never enough money, it is important to convince qualified volunteers to work in rather difficult conditions for the month long diving campaign. The major sponsors for the P.S. Lady Sherbrooke project were the Molson Family Foundation and the MacDonald Stewart Foundation who deserve special recognition.

In addition, the site and the research vessel, the John Molson II had to be prepared for the campaign. Technical factors such as the level of the water, in relation to the pump, had to be carefully considered. The general rule was that the deeper the water the more efficient was the pump. In shallow water it was more difficult to pump large volumes of water making the job more challenging and time consuming. Underwater vegetation was also a concern. Dense growths of weeds could severely handicap the divers. Considering factors such as these campaigns would take place in the Spring, beginning either in late May or early June.

It is important that all of the plans are set in the winter before the actual diving season. Once the team has been assembled the research boat and the site have to prepared for the dig.
