Welcome
to Lesson Bytes: Teaching with a Focus on BC's Heritage.
This site has
been created as a resource for elementary and secondary school (Kindergarten
to Grade 12) teachers. Designed primarily for British Columbia teachers
who work with provincially prescribed curriculum, it contains material
that educators in other jurisdictions might find useful as well.
Its main purpose
is to provide information and ideas on how online material dealing
with British Columbia's heritage (history, geography, culture) can
be effectively used to enhance students' learning.
Users of this
site will find here a collection of lesson plans, each focussing
on a particular grade level and subject area.

to credible sources, suitable for student use (most of these sites
have been developed by museums, institutions, and local community
groups across the province, in partnership with the BC Heritage
Trust and with support from various levels of government; though
not designed solely with students in mind, these sites contain
a wealth of credible, accurate information about various aspects
of British Columbia's heritage that will interest and challenge
students)
- provide detailed
and complete procedural suggestions, including questions to focus
student thinking and relevant background information, where needed
- incorporate
varied and interesting pedagogical approaches that promote active
student engagement
- include handouts
that can be duplicated and distributed to students, and ideas
for assessing student learning and performance in relation to
the targeted learning outcomes

varied teaching situations, including situations in which students
do not have full-time access to computer and Internet technology
- address a
range of subject areas within the humanities, social sciences,
