The Catch
On board both chaloupes and goélettes the fish was caught using hooks and line. Each fisherman had two lines with a hook. If the fishing was good, each line would have two hooks instead of one. They were baited with either mackerel or herring and were weighted with a lead sinker of several pounds in order to catch the bottom-feeding cod.
