The Frederic Gate

noThe Frederic Gate was the last majour architectural feature completed in Louisbourg before the siege in 1745. Designed by Étienne Verrier, Chief Engineer, it was styled after the Tuscan order, common in military installations of the Baroque Period. Being the main entrance from the harbour, it was one of four Louisbourg town gates. The gate was named "Porte Frederic" after Jean Frederique Phelypeaux, Compte de Maurepas (1701-1781), the Minister of the Marine and Colonies at the time.
