Hospitals of Louisbourg

no

With an increase in illnesses and a decrease in health standards, Louisbourg officials put pressure on the government to build a suitable hospital. The resulting hospital, which was the second largest building in Louisbourg had a capacity of 100 beds. The facility also contained an apothecary, a chapel, and a morgue. It served both civilians and military persons, but only men were admitted.

noThe Brothers of Charity of the Order of St. John of God administered treatment at the hospital. These Brothers followed strict guidelines when caring for patients. The hospital treated many types of diseases. For some years, the Brothers refused to treat men with venereal diseases but eventually they were accepted as well.

Today, the hospital lies in ruins. It was not reconstructed, but can be viewed along with many other ruins on the Fortress Site.
